People ask me how can I wear my hair in micro braids for 3
years and not have my hair fall out or my edges go bald?
My response is I braid my own hair and have been since I made the decision to go all natural. I recommend that you get your micro braids touched up every 3 weeks. The braids around your hairline should be re braided since those are the braids that endure the most pulling and can become fragile if excessive new growth forms. You can also get a wash for the braids to remove any product buildup at this time. It's also good to apply moisturizer to your scalp as often as needed to maintain a healthy scalp while you have the braids in. It's recommended that micro braids shouldn't be worn more than 3 months. Braids can begin to mat to natural hair and start to lock. It’s recommended that after 3 months braids be taken out. At that time hair should be thoroughly cleaned, deep conditioned and given a trim. I did this process every 3 weeks, than 3 months for the next 3 years and never pulled my edges out. In fact the opposite happened my hair began to grow and got thicker and thicker. Below are pictures of my journey with micro braids. As you can see I started with Yaky-straight then began to experiment with different curls. My favorite is loose deep wave by Milky Way Que. It was a long 3 year journey but I enjoyed wearing my hair in micro braids and experimenting with different kinds of hair.

I totally agree about the proper maintenance for Micro Braids. In fact, all hair extension techniques should be maintained every 2 to 3 weeks or much often. Hair braiding and twisting styles produce build up that looks like lent close to the scalp. This buildup can cause matting and breakage, especially around your hairline where the hair is fragile.
